Eirene does not know what to make of this modern world.

The house itself is very pretty, that she can admit; additionally, everyone she sees is clean and tall and astonishingly healthy-looking, but even though the lady of the house gave her several courses in what to expect it's still pretty weird. Not to mention: Eirene is wearing a modern dress (she balked a little at jeans) and it doesn't cover her knees, so she feels a little exposed about that. Martel and Candice are settling the movers, and Eirene is in the yard. Candice warned her that strangers might come by (housewarming, or some such thing, which she does know about at least), but she's hoping they don't until she's a bit more comfortable.

The little glade of trees in the yard reminds her of home - and she doesn't know whether she means Rome or Germany or Arum - so she stays out there a minute, watching the cars in the distance.
